Solgar Vitamin & Herb is proud to announce the launch of its new amino acid supplement, L-Theanine. This unique amino acid is almost exclusively found in green tea and one type of mushroom. Thought to cross the blood brain barrier and shown to have a positive effect directly stimulating the production of alpha brain waves, Theanine creates a state of deep relaxation and mental alertness similar to what is achieved through meditation.
As you may know, the brain emits weak electrical impulses (brain waves) that can be measured on the surface of the head. Brain waves are classified into four categories (delta, theta, alpha and beta) - each with an associated mental state. Delta is seen only in the deepest stages of sleep. Theta is seen in light sleep or drowsiness. Beta is seen in awake normal alert and focused stages of the day, e.g. at work. However in highly stressful situations, where there is difficulty in mental concentration some people find it difficult to wind down into other states. Alpha is present in relaxed, calm, lucid wakefulness where there is a relaxed and effortless alertness. It is well known that alpha brain waves are generated during a relaxed state and therefore alpha waves are used as an index of relaxation. In one study, alpha waves were observed within approximately 40 minutes after taking L-Theanine (i) (ii). Achieving a relaxed state-of-mind would be of particular relevance to mood stabilisation and openness to learning and memory activities. It is also used by some practitioners as an alternative to kava kava.

In addition the antioxidant properties of L-theanine are believed to support overall cardiovascular health by helping the body protect itself from LDL cholesterol, oxidation and promoting normal blood pressure.
